Presumably they aren't happy that the gays have got it so easy. In this country that the NF claim as their own, everyone is free to express their opinion by marching and... yes... by protesting. But these two handfuls of people on the sidelines of Brighton Pride this year may be about to shoot themselves in their collective foot. This is a parade about showing that we believe in who we are and it is a time to demonstrate that we expect more than just toleration - we expect equality for every person on the planet regardless of sexuality, colour, creed or gender. This is not a self-inflated pride that no doubt Christian Voice will be telling us "comes before a fall", it is simply self respect and the refusal to be humiliated by anyone for what we are. By standing at the side of the parade telling us how they think the world should be they have demonstrated the very reason for the parade. We are here, marching, because you are there, protesting. As you walk past these protesters perhaps bring to mind all those millions of gay and lesbian people who suffer persecution from people unable to accept them. Offer them a smile and thank them for making sense of Pride for you... The protestors arrived, and even before the police arrived a scuffle had started between the NF and some pride goers. said by Pete, National Front. I can say in total honesty that we did complain about the policing, and the complaints fell on deaf ears. It doesn't take a 500 IQ to work out that the designated area was totally unsuitable, and that they put us in real danger. Also two police were nowhere near enough, they wouldn't have been able to control the dozen of us, let alone the masses of hostile people who set upon us. said by Nigel As you know, members of the Brighton Lesbian & Gay Christian Movement invited mainstream Christian Churches (Anglican, RC, Methodist etc) to walk with us at Pride yesterday. We were delighted at the response, sometimes numbering up to 60 in our group, including clergy. We also had members of the Progressive Synagogue walking with us in solidarity. This is the first time in the Country that mainstream Christian Churches have walked in Pride. Judging by the cheers and appaluse we received all along the route, our presence was welcome and hopefully helped many people. Our group members were delighted to show that there are other Christian voices, than thiose expressed by Christian Voice and the like. said by john smith The truth of the Bible stands and will always stand. Truth is truth regardless as to whether you believe it or not. With that in mind, as Christians we urge people to pick up the Bible for themselves, and hear the voice of the Lord God as He speaks divine truth, He alone stands as the Sovereign and Almighty God and has declared a moral standard that we as man should not violate or willingly reject. said by Westhamandy It's the book of Leviticus that tells us that Homosexuality is wrong. But in the same place it also says that all men have to be circumcised and refrain from eating pork products. These instructions would apply to of all the Abrahamic religions, including Christianity. said by Robyn It is nice to see that everyone survived. Maybe those protesting can try to remember why pride marches occur. said by Tony Butland I am gay and spent most of my early life in a very loud, very happy and very lively but most importantly, very loving evangelical Christian church. I struggled for years to become straight because that's what I thought God wanted for me. One day I realised that I'm actually special to Him because of who I am. My church still loved me, however, and never judged me or turned their back on me. said by Pride Goer I was the Pride Goer that got arrested that weekend for breaking one of your signs... and I will tell you why... I have absolutely NO problem in anyone having a silent protest however when your little crew of people want to start shouting and swearing at us then don't expect all gays to run away screaming. said by Adrian I saw the protest on Saturday and it is as the person who was arrested stated. It was not a "silent protest" but was an attempt to confront - and that is what they got. It made me proud to be gay to see my fellows not turn and hide in shame but to confront these nasty people. page 1 | page 2 | page 3 | page 4

While I do not condone for one moment the activities of the mob that attacked Pete and his group from the National Front, it does seem somewhat foolhardy to go into a crowd of 100,000 and say something which all 100,000 would find extremely antagonistic - especially as it involved taking children with them.
For example, would you go to a football match, deliberately stand amongst the opposition's supporters and cheer when your team won and finally blame the police because you were attacked. It's not as if by being in Brighton the NF, or Christian Voice, would do anything to get the law changed - if that is what they genuinely wanted to do.
What Tatchell did in Moscow was similarly stupid but at least he was campaigning to get freedoms and not have them taken away from anyone.
