Pride... how was it for you?

Tuesday, 11 September 2007

As the sun breaks through that cloud cover and leaves start falling from the trees - another year of Pride and Mardi Gras festivities draws to a close... the common theme between the events this year seems to have been the grey skies. Oh, and the National Front and Christian Voice - who had staked out a corner at many of the festivals.

As soon as Pride festivals grow to more than a handful of people there comes talk of over-commercialisation, suggestions that the purpose of pride is being lost somehow, that there is a lack of community spirit and that we don't need pride anyway now that the LGBT is gaining such wide acceptance...

I went to both Manchester and Brighton Prides - they are very different in how they work. Manchester has opted for an enclosed space with a fee to gain entry to the village, whilst Brighton Pride is free for anyone and everyone.

More people than usual seem to be suggesting that Brighton should start charging as it is now getting so huge. I love the fact the park event at Brighton Pride is free and hope it stays that way. Then again we seem to spend less and less time there each year due to it being so manic and this year we made straight for the VIP enclosure which was worth the £10 Pride membership even if just for somewhere to sit and take everything in.

I think Brighton Pride was great, its only the second one I've been to and both have been great!

It should stay free - the whole point is about getting everyone together.

The only thing I would change is give me a bucket to collect money! The parade should be lined with people asking for money/sign petitions for relevent causes etc... it's about charity after all.

Roll on 2008!

Well Brighton was fabulous - how could it not be with the hours and hours of work so many put into it! Big thanx to all involved.

On a wider point I feel we still need all these national and international Pride events. As proved in Brighton by the Christian Right furore (oh how I love that word!) on August 4th and later on this and other websites - and of course more frighteningly in Warsaw and Moscow earlier this year.

A reminder perhaps of how Pride is a political statement as well as a party and how we need to ensure it stays that way.

This was only my second Brighton Pride and it was massive in every way. We were extremely lucky with the weather and the level of organisation and lack of trouble astounded me. Despite the crowds, it's still possible to meet up with your mates and get around the park, enjoy the stalls and then dance your tits off. I made a point last year and this of putting a tenner in the collection buckets, which the collectors seemed really surprised at but to my mind represents brilliant value for money so I wouldn't be that upset if they did start charging for entrance to the park. Still, it's nice to say that it's Europe's largest free event, isn't it? Either way, makes me very proud to be a Brightonian.

I went to pride and it was the best day ever, everyone was happy, relaxed and friendly and made you feel welcome.
