A SOLD OUT gig on a MONDAY night?! (head scratch) Huh?
But this wasn't just any old line-up.
Kicking off the evening was Bristol's most exciting female artist, Rose Kemp. Signed to Bjork's One Little Indian label and fresh from a prestigious Paris appearance alongside Juliette & the Licks, Rose treated her hometown audience to an exclusive set of new material. A mixture of beautiful vocals and violent guitar blew away the cobwebs. Although some of the tracks seemed to be stamped 'work in progress', there were pearls of promise to sit worthily beside such polished gems as the fragile looped beauty of Fire in the Garden (a myspace must!).
Next up was another rising Bristol talent. Recently signed to the US label Anticon Records, SJ Esau brought his one man band of guitar, beatbox and electrical trickery to the stage. Within seconds the recent hype seems deserved. This unpretentious, sloping, boy-like figure with his self-deprecating charm, writes darn good electro-pop. His set is full of catchy beats, humour and strangely uplifting melancholy. In short, he's ace - get Googling.
Hot on the heels of SJ Esau are his illustrious label-mates, the critically acclaimed Thee More Shallows. Promoting the release of their new album Book of Bad Breaks, these San Franciscans have the crowd salivating in anticipation. On stage there's a drum kit, some sonic gadgets, a keyboard in a suitcase, a guitar and three talented guys that flit between these instruments at will. We shouldn't be so surprised at this musical ease... Songwriter Dee Kessler apparently picked up the violin at the age of four and subsequently spent 99% of his life dreaming up songs. Welcome to his sleep-scape. It's buzzingly eccentric, yet floor-fillers such as the current single Night at the Knight School provide a pop-perfect contrast to the backdrop of sonic experimentation. This gig is all the more special given its deliberately quiet publicity. We felt lucky to be there and left in smiling satisfaction.
