Never before have we experienced such anticipation of having a well deserved Wonk, but tonight the hype was right and Wonky rode the Horse of Meat in spectacular fashion. Welcoming the students back before the influx of the new ‘breed’, saying goodbye to those flying the nest to pastures new and an excuse for a party for everyone else... tonight had the perfect combination.
Getting there early we had a “oh no it’s not going to be busy” moment and then in a flash the place was packed, magically transforming into the fantastic atmosphere we know and love from Wonky. Upstairs the electric equestrianism fed the dance floor. Throughout the night the boys from Horse Meat Disco; Sell By Dave, Legendary Tone and The Kelly Twins lived up to their reputation with a rousing repertoire of underground disco, italo, new wave and pronto house. Providing a perfect accompaniment to the buzz below, we hope it’s not long before the two are reunited once more.
Downstairs the dance floor filling duo of Bernie and James L camped things up with 80’s classics slipped in with some sleazy electro, a touch of indie and a generous serving of genius pop along the way. As we said last month, Bristol’s busiest alternative gay night is back at its best and shows why month after month we just keep coming back for more.
